China may be the fastest growing travel market, but the industry may also want to focus attention on Islamic travel, which according to a new study is expected to grow 4.8 percent by 2020. Research conducted by DinarStandard revealed, the 4.8 percent growth rate among Muslim travelers is exceeding the 3.8 percent global figure and by 2020 a total of 14 percent of international trips will be undertaken by Muslims. The study found, the most important criteria when choosing a holiday destination was the availability of halal cooked food, while up to 50 percent would choose a destination for its Muslim-friendly atmosphere. According to DinarStandard senior associate Reem El Shafaki, destinations tailoring their services to the Muslim market are already seeing an increase in visitors, particularly noting the 38 percent increase in visitors to Queensland, Australia after introducing Muslim-friendly services. Meanwhile tour operators can also get on board, according to the study, by ensuring halal food is on the menu as well as providing suitable prayer rooms for worshiping.
