Emirates Airlines announced on Tuesday that the company is working towards providing free wifi services on most of its fleet. This is in response to high demand of the service from its international travelers. Since the inception wifi services from the airlines offering, over half a million passengers have used it to connect, mostly to, Google, Facebook, Whatsapp and the likes. The current model allows up to 10MB of free usage, beyond which the company charges a token amount of $1 for the next 600MB.
Unfortunately, technical limitations have restricted Emirates Airlines from offering fast, reliable and free internet on all of its fleet. The company is investing $20 million per year to upgrade its hardware and maintain its wifi services. Tim Clark, Emirates president, said he believes onboard wifi will ultimately become a free service, and a standard passengers will begin to expect from a full service airline, such as refreshments and in-flight entertainment.
Onboard WiFi will be sure to marginally minimize the boredom of quietly sitting through a 14 hour flight. I guess now we can look forward to live Instagram updates of friends posting selfies from 30,000 feet in the air.
